BASIS.ed K-4

The BASIS.ed K-4 program has been developed to help prepare students for the high-achieving curriculum in the BASIS.ed Lower School (grades 5-7) and Upper School (grades 8-12). To ensure superior instruction, we have two teachers in each classroom.

Kindergarten is taught in self-contained classrooms. Students are co-taught by two teachers: an experienced Lead Teacher and a Teaching Fellow, who has at least a bachelor's degree and aspires to become a Lead Teacher. Our teachers focus equally on the social, emotional, physical, and academic development of their students.

Kindergarten lays the foundation for success in school during the years to come. This success is based not only on the acquisition of foundational concepts and skills, but also on the adoption of scholarly habits and the immersion in a culture which values learning above all other endeavors.

Our core curriculum is comprised of courses in Language and Literacy; Math; Civics, History and Science; and Physical Education. Our enrichment curriculum includes courses in Engineering & Technology, Fine Arts (Visual Arts, Performing Arts, and Music), and Mandarin.

Starting in Grade 1, BASIS.ed students are no longer in a self-contained classroom, but are still co-taught by two caring faculty members. In every course, a Subject Expert (SET) who specializes in that discipline (Humanities, Math, Science, Engineering, Art, Mandarin, etc.) teaches the students. Across all disciplines, the Learning Expert (LET), who focuses on effective pedagogy, travels from class to class each day with their cohort of students, and co-teaches with each SET.

The role of the Learning Expert Teacher (LET) is to make sure that students understand what they are being taught, and that every individual student is working to the absolute best of his/her personal ability. The LET travels with his/her students throughout the school day and is always there to aid in their scholastic development. LETs provide a high level of progress-monitoring, parent communication and enrichment to all students and their families.

The synergy of the SET and LET facilitates a relatively rapid transition from instruction in foundational skills and knowledge to independent thinking and active learning in the primary grades. These teachers work together to help students make connections between disciplines through the reiteration of key concepts throughout the curriculum. This fosters the progression from acquisition to application of knowledge, and prepares students for the challenges and opportunities of the BASIS 5-12 program.

Students in grades 1-4 take integrated blocks of content, supplemented by enrichment courses that highlight the interdisciplinary connections between their classes. These courses are the same in each of the primary years, so that important skills and concepts can be revisited in increasing complexity and detail. "Mastery of the basics" is a key component of the BASIS curriculum model, and is achieved through this consistency of courses in the primary grades.

Students in grades 1-4 take the following courses: Humanities, Math and Science, Fine Arts (Visual Arts, Performance Arts, and Music), Connections, READ, Engineering & Technology, Mandarin, and Physical Education/Martial Arts.
